Explosion Venting

Explosion Venting (with either Explosion Vents/Bursting Discs, Explosion Doors or automatically reclosing Flameless Explosion Relief Valves) is a cost-effective method to mitigate the consequences of gas or dust explosions. Explosion vents are designed for venting deflagrations. This is the rapid burning of a mixture of dust or gas or hybrid mixture within an oxygen-rich atmosphere (typically air) leading to a very rapid pressure rise at subsonic speeds inside the vessel or system. The developed flame and pressure front can be discharged through the explosion vent opening and if the vent area design is done correctly (ie according to EN1449:2012 or NFPA68:2018) will reduce the explosion peek overpressure inside the equipment from a dangerous Pmax level (if the equipment is not designed to resist Pmax) to Pred (below the design strength of the equipment). According to AS/NZS 4745:2012 , certified explosion vents must be used.

If the pressure and flame are not relieved, the vessel or system can be ruptured, causing the products of the rapid combustion to be released uncontrollably, causing widespread damage to plant and personnel. Explosion venting must be directed to a safe area where the vented flame width and length are calculated and taken into account or alternatively, flameless venting using (eg Brilex IndoorVents) or Flameless Explosion Relief Valves (eg Hoerbiger EVN) may be considered.

The calculated explosion vent area is dependent on the geometry of the equipment being protected, the product explosion characteristics of the product Kst (max) or Kg (max) and Pmax as well as the pressure shock resistant strength which is related to Pred (maximum overpressure during a vented explosion. The required effective relief area for isolated enclosures can be calculated using the most recent editions of internationally recognised NFPA 68:2018 and EN 14491:2012 (Adopted formulas from VDI3673) standards, depending on your requirements. The “Australian Code of Practice for Handling Combustible Dusts” AS/NZS:4745:2012 which requires the use of certified explosion vents allows you the choice of which of the above standards and methods to use.

Explosion vents are categorised for “single-use” applications – such as Bursting Discs or “multiple-use” applications such as automatically reclosing Explosion Doors or Hoerbiger EVN Explosion Relief Valves. There are not many explosion doors on the market that can guarantee high venting efficiencies (high effective vent areas) as well as multiple-use after several explosions. This is because the forces of the explosion need to be resisted and absorbed by the explosion door. CMC Technologies does, however, have this unique product available through its distribution agreement with Thorwesten Vent. These explosion doors can be combined with emergency inerting systems to prevent secondary explosions so that they are activated after an explosion and after the explosion door closes.

If the risk assessment permits the use of single-use explosion vents (bursting discs), CMC Technologies through its distribution agreement with IEP Technologies (formerly Brilex) – provides very high-quality, cost-effective explosion vents. Brilex explosion vents can be used for applications with vent ducts or flameless vents for protecting vessels that are located indoors. Brilex explosion vents can be used in combination with active and passive explosion isolation measures that are essential to comply with current standards.

Evn In Action

Venting of dust explosions has been practiced for more than 50 years and provides cost-effective protection for facilities where dust explosions can occur. When specifying explosion vents, the immense impact of pressure waves and flame propagation in the outside area needs to be considered. Explosion relief must therefore be directed to a safe area. IEP – BRILEX – Explosion Vents are specially designed for the relief of dust explosions. By early relief of an incipient explosion, IEP Technologies – BRILEX Explosion Vents protect people and industry worldwide.

IEP Technologies – Brilex explosion vent panels are designed, manufactured, tested, and certified to open at a predetermined pressure (Pstat), to allow the fireball and explosive pressure to vent to a safe area. Explosion Vents are available in a full range of sizes, configurations, and opening pressures. Depending on the specific application, explosion vents are available in flat, multi-layer, and domed configurations to provide the right protection solution. Suitable for a very wide range of explosion parameters ranging from very high Kst values down to very low Pred levels, engineered and selected correctly explosion venting can serve as the simplest protection method. Explosion isolation must also be considered in order to reduce the risk of flame propagation to interconnected vessels or the plant itself. EN14491:2012 stipulates under what conditions explosion isolation may or may not be required for interconnected vessels.

Iep Evn 3.0h Explosion Relief Valve

The IEP Hoerbiger EVN 2.0 and EVN 3.0 valves are truly ground-breaking explosion relief valves and flameless explosion vents. These innovative valves are designed with a low-mass valve plate and a low response pressure, enabling them to react swiftly in the event of an explosion. Within fractions of a second, these flameless vents spring into action, effectively mitigating the risks associated with explosions.

One remarkable feature of the IEP Hoerbiger explosion relief valves is their ability to prevent any flames from escaping. Additionally, thanks to their quick reclosing mechanism automatically or manually, there is no air influx after the explosion, ensuring optimal safety. Furthermore, these valves seal completely after reclosing, guaranteeing an airtight seal.

Whether it’s horizontal or vertical installations, these valves can be operated in any mounting position. Their user-friendly design makes them easy to install, saving valuable time and effort. As an added benefit, they require minimal maintenance, making them virtually maintenance-free.

The IEP Hoerbiger EVN 2.0 (superseded by EVN3.0) and EVN 3.0 valves provide an exceptional level of safety and efficiency, effectively reducing the chances of secondary explosions and the need for costly replacements.

IV8 Flameless Vents

IEP Technologies / Brilex IV8 Flameless Explosion Vent for the passive explosion protection – flameless explosion venting device has superior net relief areas due to its patented design. The IV8 Flameless Explosion vent offers a specialized solution for process vessels located indoors or in areas where traditional explosion venting is not safe.

In such cases, flameless explosion vents serve as the optimal protection solution. When an explosion happens, the venting device opens and safely releases the explosion pressure and flame through a flame arrester. By doing so, it effectively cools the hot gases and extinguishes the flame. The IV8 model employs a robust carbon steel coated frame that encloses a reliable stainless steel explosion relief vent and flame-arresting mesh. Additionally, it comes equipped with an integrated vent burst detection sensor, allowing plant personnel to promptly respond in the event of an explosion occurring within the protected application.
