Active Explosion Suppressor Types

IEP Technologies – eSuppressor™ (High Rate Discharge Suppressor)

The patented eSuppressor™ is a high-rate discharge extinguisher used for explosion suppression and chemical isolation systems. Its electro-mechanical operation is unique to the industry, as no pyrotechnic devices are required for activation. The eSuppressor™ has standard features that include pressure monitoring, lock out-tag out capability and LED indication of device status. A key benefit is that all the safety functions are fully monitored, which is not possible for any device employing pyrotechnic actuators, with full redundancy and third party SIL2 certification. Upon detection of an explosion event, the eSuppressor valve mechanism is actuated via the Explosion Protection Control Unit. The highly specified trigger mechanism allows the valve flap to open extremely rapidly (less than 10ms), which allows the suppressant to be discharged through the nozzle system into the protected volume.

IEP Technologies – Protractor Operated HRD (PHRD) Suppressor

Protractor Operated Hrd (phrd) Suppressor

These suppressors are used for explosion suppression of gases, solvent vapours and combustible dusts. The suppressors deliver high rates of suppressant that quench an explosion flame in its early stages, thus preventing a pressure rise from reaching dangerous proportions.

A cylindrical alloy steel container filled with 3kg, 4kg or 16kg of powder suppressant and pressurised to 60 bar (880 psi) with dry nitrogen. Inside the flange is a hinged flap supported by a beam which is kept closed by a latch. Two piston, non-explosive protractor operated actuators are used to initiate opening. When the actuators are activated by means of an electrical impulse from the associated control unit, pistons move the latch, which allows the flap to open and provide a clean , unrestricted opening. The nitrogen then expels the suppressant at high rate through the spreader assembly into the protected volume.

IEP Technologies – E-HRD Suppressor

The E-HRD suppressor is designed for installation on all types of vessels, ducts and pipes for dusts, gases and hybrid mixtures. The suppressor valve is closed with a domed disc and sealing ring and then pressurized with nitrogen. Beneath the domed disc are the actuation devices, comprising a detonator and line-cutting charge. Within approximately 1.5 milliseconds the line-cutting charge cuts a grooved hole approximately 300 degrees around the domed disc. Once the domed disc is cut, the nitrogen presses the disc down and the entire cross section is made available for the suppressant powder to flow out. Through a special nozzle system, an optimal deployment of the suppressant powder is achieved.

IEP Technologies – Piston Fire II High Rate Discharge Suppressor

Pistonfire Ii High Rate Discharge Suppressor

The PistonFire suppressor consists of a pressurized suppressant storage cylinder and a valve body that contains a dust-ignition proof, weatherproof National Electrical Manufacture’s Association (“NEMA”) enclosure. The NEMA enclosure houses the actuating mechanism, pressure switch, pressure gauge, fill valve, OSHA supervisory switch, and field wiring connections. The NEMA enclosure is completely sealed via screw cover and an explosion-proof quick-disconnect connector for easy connection to field wiring. Upon detection of an incipient explosion, the suppressor receives an actuation signal. The actuating mechanism initiates the rapid release of the pressurized, dry-chemical suppressant into the protected area within milliseconds. Competitive advantages include:

  • DOT, TC approved – pressurized and leak-tested at factory and shipped to site, vs. pressurizing and leak testing at customer facility
  • Monitored and interlocked low-pressure switch per latest version of NFPA 69
  • Non-explosive initiators, safe to handle (no ATF or UN restrictions)
  • OSHA lockout plate per latest version of NFPA 69
  • Nozzles can be inspected in-place (NFPA 69) vs. removal or vessel entry by other companies

IEP Technologies – Firewolf High Rate Discharge Suppressor ( Electro Mechanical Suppressor – Replaced By eSuppressor)

The IEP Technologies Firewolf™ suppressor is designed to discharge suppressant in milliseconds within a process vessel, or to mitigate the propagation of flame through interconnected ductwork. It consists of a pressurized suppressant storage cylinder and a valve body that contains a dust-ignition proof, weatherproof enclosure. The Firewolf™ houses an electro-mechanical actuation mechanism and does not use pyrotechnic detonators or gas generators.

Upon detection of an incipient explosion, an actuation signal is sent to the suppressor by the control panel. The electronics of the valve trigger two pairs of capacitors which discharge into the redundant electro-motor coils, releasing the flap valve mechanism of the Firewolf™ and initiating the rapid release of the pressurized, suppressant into the protected area within milliseconds.

This suppressor features an electromechanical, non-explosive actuation for increased safety and reduced storage, licensing, and transportation concerns; reduced maintenance costs as there are no replacement actuators or detonators; and a Valve Transport Lock that functions as both a lockout/tag-out provision and promotes safe entry into protected vessel.
